What to think about when purchasing a DLP TV

Is a DLP television your best choice?  Consider the following before making your decision. To compare DLP TVs to other types of high definition TVs, check out the Best Plasma TV, Best LCD TV and projection TV sections of our site.

The technology

The DLP TV is a rear-projection television, meaning the pictures are created through light manipulation.  The light comes from a single source, usually a Metal Halide or Ultra High Performance bulb, and is manipulated as it is projected onto the screen.

Entertainment / PC needs

DLP televisions are multi-functional and have numerous home and office usages.  Acting as both a television and a computer monitor, DLP TVs can display conventional TV, HDTV, graphic intensive software, and almost any video format.  Depending on the model, DLP TVs feature many inputs making it easy to hook up a home theater system, computer, video game console and more.

Desired picture quality

DLP TVs are easy on the eyes.  DLP TV technology allows the sets to deliver bright and vivid pictures.  View seamless, realistic images with a fine reproduction of blacks over the entire screen – even at the outermost edges.  The high speed micromirrors that DLP TVs use to manipulate light eliminate screen burn, image streaking and motion artifacts. This makes the DLP TV great for gaming and watching fast action and sports.  DLP TVs are especially suited for graphic intensive computer software applications due to their clear, pixel-free images and their ability to display perfectly straight lines.

Screen size

If you want a large rear projection television, a DLP TV is your ideal choice.  They are available in many screen sizes, from 42”+.  DLP TVs are slim with a depth of approximately 14”…and manufacturers are working to significantly reduce the depth to make them more in line with the plasma or LCD TV.

Placement desires

DLP TVs are well suited for stands and at 85 – 100 lbs weigh considerably less than cathode ray tube televisions (CRT).  Their large size screen and picture-perfect technology create a movie theater experience right in your own home, making them ideal for the living room, den, or in an office conference room.  Since DLP TVs have tuners and speakers built in, you don’t need a lot of room for external tuning devices and wires.

DLP TV models have horizontal viewing angles of up to 160 – 170 degrees. It is suggested, however, that the set be placed at eye level for optimal viewing consistency.

In addition, DLP TVs are not affected by heat and humidity.

Room size requirements

DLP TVs are large televisions in sizes of over 42”.  All have HDTV broadcast tuners that are built-in, reducing the space needed for external devices and wires. For maximum picture quality, the room size should be able to allow the DLP TV to be viewed at eye level. Read here to find out how to choose the best size TV for your room.

Room lighting

DLP TVs have a very bright picture and are great HDTV choice for any type of room, including high sunlight rooms.  For maximum color accuracy, your DLP TV should be placed at eye level.

Multiple usages

DLP TVs can be used as both a television monitor and a computer monitor and typically have inputs for composite video, s-video and component video and RGB computer inputs.  Its large screen size, high resolution and perfect geometry images make for impressive viewing of movies, HDTV, video games, web-based content, data and office presentations.

Design

DLP televisions are elegantly designed with screens over 42”.  They are slimmer than CRT TVs and have depths of approximately 14”, although newer models may be even thinner.  Mounted on sleek TV stands, LCD TVs add a contemporary look to larger sized rooms.

Lifespan

DLP TVs are long lasting high definition televisions.  DLP televisions are a better value per viewing inch over plasma TVs and large screen LCD flat panels.  They are durable and will not require any maintenance save for a bulb replacement.  With normal care and usage, a DLP TV can last many years.

Preferred viewing angles

While you can view some DLP TVs at up to a 170 degree angle, they are best viewed at eye-level.  Viewing at extreme angles can diminish color brilliance.  For more panoramic viewing options, check out plasma televisions.

Disadvantages of DLP televisions:

While DLP televisions offer many great features, there are certain things that should be considered before your purchase.  However, technology is rapidly changing and many of the newest DLP televisions make these disadvantages obsolete. Check individual models for their specifications.

Bulb replacement costs

While DLP TVs can last for years, the bulb will need to be replaced.  Bulbs typically cost between $200 and $400.
Size

DLP televisions are significantly slimmer than traditional CRT TVs, yet not as slim as plasma TVs.  With screen sizes starting at 42” and depths from around 14”, DLP TVs require a larger amount of room space and cannot be hung on a wall.

Horizontal Viewing angles

DLP TVs can be viewed at different angles, but need to be placed at eye level.  Picture quality diminishes when viewed from above or below eye level.
