Best LCD Television

What to think about when purchasing an LCD TV

Is an LCD television your best choice?  Consider the following before making your decision. To compare LCD TVs to other types of High Definition TVs, check out the Best Plasma TV, Best DLP and projection TV sections of our site.

The technology

LCD TVs use a complex transmissive Liquid Crystal Display technology consisting of a crystals-in-solution placed between two sheets of polarizing material.  The crystal solution can either allow light to pass or block it depending upon the electric current passing through.  When the current does pass through, the crystals align and block the light.  The current can be manipulated and the crystals reconfigured to allow the passage of light and the appearance of the image on the screen.

Entertainment / PC needs

LCD televisions are truly multi-functional and double as both a TV and computer monitor. LCD TVs can be used for watching conventional TV, HDTV, home videos, playing video games or as a versatile part of your home office.

Desired picture quality

LCD televisions can accept high resolution images.  This resolution enables you to enjoy sharp, color-saturated pictures, text and graphics.  LCD TVs produce high contrast blacks and whites and have a fine dot pitch which create a richly detailed and realistic display.  In contrast to older LCD TV models, the newest LCD TVs have increased display response times resulting in smoother image transitions.  The chance of “smearing”, the image phenomenon caused by slower responses times, is greatly reduced.

Screen size

Once of the most notable benefits of the LCD TV is its size.  Small and compact with a modern flat screen, LCD televisions fit where others can’t. They can be mounted on a stand, under a cabinet or hung on a wall.  An LCD TV is a multifunctional monitor that works well in a kitchen, on a desktop or in a tight corner of a bedroom.

Placement desires

LCD TVs are among the smallest, most lightweight High Definition televisions on the market and are available in a multitude of sizes. They are ideal for family rooms, offices, countertops and even bathrooms!  They can be wall mounted, hung from under a cabinet or positioned on stand.  Whatever placement method you choose, LCD TVs offer an exciting world of versatile viewing options.

Room size requirements

Tight spaces are no problem for the compact LCD TV.  As long as you can accommodate all the connectors and cables, an LCD TV can fit just about anywhere. Read here to find out how to choose the best size TV for your room.

Room lighting

LCD televisions resist glare and work in all types of rooms including those with very bright lighting. For maximum picture illumination, your LCD TV should be placed at eye level and in indirect sunlight.

Multiple usages

LCD TVs have exceptional connectivity options and can be used as both a television monitor and a computer monitor.  They feature a variety of inputs depending on the model -- HDMI digital inputs, VGA PC input, stereo audio inputs, S-video inputs and more. Hook up a game console, PC or other type of digital media with one cost-effective LCD TV.

Design

LCD televisions are generally under 47” and take up very little space.  They are great for kitchens, home offices, under cabinets or hung on a wall.

Lifespan

An LCD TV will last as long as its backlight does. Manufacturers are rating backlights up to 50,000 hours.

Preferred viewing angles

While you can view some LCD TVs at up to a 170 degree horizontal angle, they are best viewed straight on and at eye-level.  However, LCD TV manufacturers are addressing this issue and are continually improving their field of vision more and more every year. For more panoramic viewing options, check out plasma televisions.

Disadvantages of LCD televisions:

While LCD televisions offer many great features, there are certain things that should be considered before your purchase.  However, technology is rapidly changing and many of the newest LCD televisions make these disadvantages obsolete. Check individual models for their specifications.

Delay / refresh rates

Refresh rates refer to the amount of time a picture’s image is refreshed per second.  The higher the refresh rates, the less lag will occur.  Lower refresh rates are particularly noticeable during fast-motion scenes.  The image may appear smeared. LCD TVs are known for having lower refresh rates than plasma TVs, but the newest, brand name models are improving the rates dramatically.

Size

Flat screen LCD TVs are small to large screen sizes under 47”.  The price of LCD TVs goes up as the screen size increases. They are wall mountable up to 46”.  Rear projection floor standing LCD models are available from 50” – 60”.

Horizontal Viewing angles

LCD TVs were originally used as computer monitors.  Most LCD TVs need to be placed at eye level and viewed straight on.  Picture quality diminishes when viewed at more extreme angles. However, top name LCD TV manufacturers have greatly improved viewing parameters.
